About Tuft & Needle

Founded 2012 · US

JT Marino and Daehee Park bootstrapped Tuft & Needle to $42M revenue in three years on a thesis that mattress retail was broken — endless showroom haggling for products that all came from the same factories. They sold to Serta Simmons in 2018 for $450M, one of the largest DTC exits of that decade. The Tuft & Needle deal effectively defined the mattress-DTC category that Casper, Purple and a dozen others followed.

  • 02$170M revenue at exit
  • 03Bootstrapped to nine-figure revenue without external capital

Notable for the llms.txt validator

Tuft & Needle's storefront, post-Serta, is interesting as a study in what happens when an aggressively DTC-native brand gets folded into traditional retail enterprise tech. The Schema + app inventory shows the resulting hybrid.

What this AI-search readiness signals

A D-grade llms.txt means the file exists but has structural problems — usually unparseable markdown, missing H1, or links that don't lead anywhere. These are common when a file gets hand-written without checking against the spec. Each finding ships with a copy-paste-ready markdown snippet on the live tool.

Cross-check with the Schema Audit — high-grade structured data + a clean llms.txt are the two pillars of AI-search visibility. Brands that win one tend to win the other.
