Tool
Shopify Theme Detector
Identify any Shopify store's theme — name, vendor, Shopify 2.0 readiness, section architecture and customisation depth. We detect every stock Shopify theme (Dawn, Sense, Refresh, Studio, Trade, Origin, Crave, Spotlight, Ride, Colorblock, Taste) plus 20+ commercial themes (Impulse, Prestige, Empire, Motion, Streamline, Turbo, Pipeline, Showcase, Symmetry…). Free, no login.
What this detects
We fetch the homepage and walk three layers of detection. First, thewindow.Shopify.themeJSON every Shopify storefront exposes inline — gives us the merchant-configured theme name + ID. Second, a signature library matched against the rendered HTML to identify the underlying commercial theme (Impulse, Prestige, Empire, Motion, Streamline…) even when the merchant has renamed it for their brand. Third, we count Shopify 2.0 section markers, theme app extensions and customisation signals (inline scripts/styles, blocking stylesheets, HTML weight) so you can see how heavily the theme has been modified.
Honest caveats
- Theme signatures match against the public HTML — heavily customised themes that have stripped the original CSS class structure show up as "Custom / heavily modified". That's not a detection failure, it's an accurate description.
- We track 30+ themes today — the biggest stock + commercial themes. Niche themes outside this set still surface their merchant-configured name from Shopify.theme JSON, just without the "underlying template = X" identification.
- Customisation signals are observational, not normative. A high inline-script count usually signals app embed bloat, but a Shopify Plus store with deliberate performance investment will also score high — context matters.
Frequently asked
How does a Shopify theme detector work?
Every Shopify storefront serves an inline JSON object — window.Shopify.theme — that names the active theme. We read that JSON, then match the rendered HTML against an 85+-theme signature database (unique CSS class prefixes, vendor CDN hosts, inline globals) to identify the underlying commercial or stock theme even when the merchant has renamed it.
Which Shopify themes does this tool detect?
19 stock Shopify themes (Dawn, Debut, Brooklyn, Minimal, Boundless, Venture, Narrative, Supply, Simple, Sense, Refresh, Studio, Trade, Origin, Crave, Spotlight, Ride, Colorblock, Taste) plus 65+ commercial premium themes — Impulse, Prestige, Empire, Motion, Symmetry, District, Pipeline, Showcase, Streamline, Turbo, Booster Theme, Polaris, Vantage, Be Yours, Ella and many more.
What is Shopify Online Store 2.0 and how do I know if a theme uses it?
Shopify 2.0 is the section-based theme architecture Shopify launched in 2021. We detect it by counting <div id="shopify-section-..."> markers in the homepage HTML — if any are present, it is a 2.0 theme; if not, it is a "vintage" pre-2.0 theme.
Can the tool detect a heavily customised Shopify theme?
Yes — but with limits. If the original CSS class structure is intact, signatures still match. If a merchant stripped or renamed everything, we report "Custom / heavily modified" and surface the merchant-configured name from Shopify.theme JSON.
Is the Shopify Theme Detector free?
Yes — no login, no signup. Rate-limited to 20 requests per minute per IP. Built by BrandUp Factory, a Shopify Partner agency, as part of an open suite of free Shopify utilities.
